Medical Center Hospice Volunteer Program
Hospice volunteers are loyal and sensitive individuals who give of themselves to help insure the mission of hospice care. Committed to excellence in care, hospice volunteers have a profound respect for the specialized needs and comfort of terminally ill patients and their families.
There are 5 main areas in which volunteers are needed to complete our circle of care. These areas are as follows:
Patient Care: Companionship for patient and family members, relief for caregivers, providing recreational activities, preparing lite meals, running simple errands, light housekeeping and yard maintenance, commemorating patients’ lives, reading to patients, writing correspondance for patients, sitting quietly with a patient.
Bereavement: Making phonecalls or visits to the bereaved, sending cards/letters to the bereaved, Praying with and for the bereaved.
Administration: Answering phones, typing, filing, organizing mailouts.
Specialty Services: Hair and nail care, Music therapy, Pet therapy, Massage, Real Estate Advice, Legal Counsel.
Church, Civic, or Social Groups: Hosting supply drives for patients and families, conducting arts and craft projects, adopting a patient lacking local support.
Depending on which area suits your needs, you will go through a variety of training courses before you are placed with a patient and family. We assure that you will feel confident and competent before beginning your service as a hospice volunteer. The time commitment is up to you. Any time is appreciated and all skills are able to be fully utilized. We look forward to working with you and thank you for your willingness to serve in any capacity.
